Solutions to common dental problems
Periodontal Disease (Gum Disease)
Periodontal disease is also known as gum disease or periodontitus. It is a bacterial infection.
The infection attacks soft tissue and bone, which support your teeth. The result may be the destruction of your gums and bone and eventual loss of your tooth.
A dentist can examine your gums and determine whether you are impacted by gum disease. The two most common types of gum disease are gingivitis and periodontitus.
Depending on the stage of deterioration there are different treatment options.

There are many reasons why you may develop periodontal disease. These include:
- plaque and tartar
- poor oral hygiene habits
- medications
- illnesses that impact the condition of your gums
- family history of gum disease
This is the first stage of gum disease. Your gums may appear red, swollen, are tender and may also bleed.
Early stages of gingivitis is where plaque build up causes the gums to get inflamed and irritated.
If gingivitis is untreated, it may advance to periodontitus. This is where the inner layer of the gum and bone pull away from the teeth. The gap or pockets that is created can get infected. This may break down the bone and connective tissue.
Teeth can become loose and it could eventually lead to the loss of the tooth.
Gum disease may progress without pain and with only a few symptoms. But you may have some warning signs that there is a problem.
